Beginning in mid-June 2017, Environmental Health inspectors, responding to multiple citizen complaints, sampled areas of Discovery Bay for blue-green algae. Preliminary field tests have indicated the presence of harmful blue-green algae. Environmental Health is actively working to determine if harmful levels of algal toxins are present in the water samples and will continue to sample the water every 2-3 weeks throughout the Discovery Bay community as needed. All the sampling results will be updated on this map http://cchealth.org/eh/pdf/algae-map-discovery-bay.pdf.
Environmental Health advises residents and visitors to Discovery Bay to avoid coming into contact with water in affected areas. Avoiding contact with the water is also advised for pets. Based on the results obtained from the EPA and in accordance with state guidance, Environmental Health will post public access areas and advise residents of harmful toxin levels via social media and other electronic communication.
